hi to all members ,
i m using RHEL-5 on my system the problem that i've faced is i was using KDE Desktop on RHEL-5.the problem started when i pressed Ctrl+Alt+Backspace (Un-Intentionally) when system was responding to any calls now the problem arises now i cant see or switch to my KDE desktop even after rebooting , after rebooting system it gaves a Error MEssage somethin like ki

" X server shutdown more then 6 times in less then 90sec there seems to be a major problem system will again try to initiate after 2 min "

and then again i can only see mouse pointer on monitor nothing else on Black Out screen. When try to run startx from cmd prompt then it starts the GUI with GNOME terminal n i cant get back to KDE desktop and with INIT 5 command it again send me to the above error. don't know what the problem is.i cant figure out where the problem is....so if any1 can suggest anything

another thing is when the system boots it does show GUI display where i can see the boot process ,devices initialization n there is no failure of any kind while shut down or at boot up
but as soon as boot process completes at the time of log-in screen problems arises

thanks in advance

Well, RHEL known for poor support for KDE. Anyways, log in from terminal, look for .kde directory in home dir of that user and rename it to KDE. Now reboot and see, if you can log in . Also there are several .XSessions files move them to some other dir and reboot. Let us know, if could get it resolved.

hi to all members ,
hello sir, i did try us suggetion but again there is no result i mean there is GUI at the time of boot but when its login screen then from that point on there is no GUI only a black screen with mouce pointer.

i also tried by booting the system in Full multiuser mode (INIT 3) by changing in /etc/inittab
and then tried

$init 5

and no result and when i tried

$startx

then it gives me Gnome GUI for woking which is working good with out any problem.Apart from this 1more interesting that now started is at the time of shutdown or reboot the XFC and ACPI daemon fails to shutdown and shows Failed message status.

thanks and regards

when the X crashes try doing a kdm/gdm restart on a terminal if you can access one.
Code:

sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart

hi to all members,
well thanks for reply but when i tried it there was nothing like

/etc/init.d/kde

what i m having is " kdump ,killall ,kudzu " that starts with 'K' after init.d/

so still using startx after using system in init-3 mode which is giving gnome desktop

thanks and Regards

Have you got KDE and have you got GDM available?

Go to prompt as user..
Code:

[user]$ kde-menu --version
Qt: 3.3.4
KDE: 3.5.2-0.1.fc4 Red Hat
kde-menu: 1.0

then for Gnome
Code:

[user]$ gdm --version
GDM 2.6.0.8

So I have both KDE and GDM avaialable on system...

To run KDE..
Code:

[user]$ startkde --replace

will give you the KDE desktop
.

Code:

[user]$ gdm start

will give you the gnome if you are running KDE already.
You may find a better solution here
