Well, I never tried RHEL4 on SATA. But you can try this while installing.

Boot from your RHEL installation CD and run this command on linux prompt:

linux all-generic-ide

I hope it should work. BTW, why RHEL, when CentOS is there. Great Distro for Servers. Do give it a try.

I guess, Chetan resolved the issue. But he is on vacation for a week. He will reply when back.

I am running CentOS 5.1 on SATA drives without no probs. I guess, you should try it. And since RHEL4 is now quite old, try it with RHEL5, it must work.

yes I have solved this problem by disabling the sata support in bios setup. infact i had intalled RHEL3 on the compaq laptop having SATA HDD
