MIB Short for Management Information Base, a database of objects that can be monitored by a network management system. Both SNMP and RMON use standardized MIB formats that allows any SNMP and RMON tools to monitor any device defined by a MIB.

The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is the standard operations and maintenance protocol for the Internet. SNMP-based management not only produces management solutions for systems, applications, complex devices, and environmental control systems, but also provides the Internet management solutions supporting Web services. SNMPv3, the most recent standard approved by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), adds secure capabilities (like encryption). Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is used in network management systems to monitor network-attached devices for conditions that warrant administrative attention. SNMP is a component of the Internet Protocol Suite as defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). It consists of a set of standards for network management, including an application layer protocol, a database schema, and a set of data objects.
